Hush-A-Bye, Ma Baby (Missouri Waltz)
Hush-a-bye, ma baby, slumber-time is comin’ soon;
Rest yo’ head upon ma breast while Mammy hums a tune;
The sandman is callin’ where shadows are fallin’,
While the soft breezes sigh as in days long gone by.
’Way down in Missouri where I heard this melody,
When I was a Pickaninny on ma Mammy’s knee;
The darkies were hummin,’
Their banjos were strummin’
So sweet and low.
Strum, strum, strum, strum, strum,
Seems I hear those banjos playin’ once again,
Hum, hum, hum, hum, hum,
That same old plaintive strain.
Hear that mournful melody,
It just haunts you the whole day long,
And you wander in dreams back to Dixie it seems,
When you hear that old time song.
Hush-a-bye, ma baby, go to sleep on Mammy’s knee,
Journey back to Dixieland in dreams again with me;
It seems like yo Mammy was there once again,
And the darkies were strummin’ that same old refrain.
Way down in Missouri where I learned this lullaby,
When the stars were blinkin’ and the moon was climbin’ high,
And I hear Mammy Cloe, as in days long ago
Singing hush-a-bye.

She Is The Sunshine Of Virginia
Somewhere a heart is calling,
In Virginia far away,
Where the blue-bird’s mating,
There my sweetie’s waiting,
I’m returning home today,
If you’ve got a heart within “ya,”
My little girl is bound to win “ya,”
Just like the sunshine of Virginia!
All the little flowers nod their pretty heads,
When my sweetie passes by,
All the little birdies in the trees,
Honey bees,
Hum and sing and ev’rything and
All the little children on their way to school
Meet her and greet her with a smile,
Is it any wonder that I love her,
When like the sunny skies above her
She is the sunshine of Virginia.
All the little flowers nod their pretty heads,
When my sweetie passes by,
All the little birdies in the trees,
Honey bees,
Hum and sing and ev’rything and
All the little children on their way to school
Meet her and greet her with a smile,
Is it any wonder that I love her,
When like the sunny skies above her
She is the sunshine of Virginia.
There in the Blue Ridge Mountains,
In Virginia far away,
There my heart is lying
Where the pines are sighing,
I am longing for the day
When off to the church I take her,
My little wife for life I’ll make her,
She’ll be my sunshine of Virginia.
All the little flowers nod their pretty heads,
When my sweetie passes by,
All the little birdies in the trees,
Honey bees,
Hum and sing and ev’rything and
All the little children on their way to school
Meet her and greet her with a smile,
Is it any wonder that I love her,
When like the sunny skies above her
She is the sunshine of Virginia.
All the little flowers nod their pretty heads,
When my sweetie passes by,
All the little birdies in the trees,

You Were Just Made To Order For Me
A shady nook a babbling brook
A little moonlight on the side,
A happy pair are spooning there
From the world they try to hide
He whispers “Dear when you are near
The answer in your eyes I see
The stars above shine on our love
For you were made to order just for me.
Some one just seems to hold me in a spell
And I know it well,
Someone has lips that seem to whisper this
“Just a little kiss”
June-time that sil’vry moon-time was made for spoon-time
And hearts were made for turtle doving
Some loving
Sunshine was made to
Make the flowers fair for a loving pair
Two eyes were made to see that we will always happy be
Springtime was made to order just for ring-time
But honey you were just made to order for me.
The same old moon, the lovers croon,
The same old song of love is heard,
A fond caress the answer “yes”
Oh! what music in that word
He steals a kiss, and murmurs this
“I always want you near my heart
The world is glad but oh! how sad
’Twould be my dear if we should ever part.

Is There Still Room For Me Neath The Old Apple Tree
Hello there long distance, please don’t make me wait in vain
I asked you to connect me with a homestead down in Maine.
I hate to hold the wire, don’t get mad if I complain
I long to hear my sweetheart’s voice again,
Oh, hello dear, yes, this is me, I’m many miles away,
I’m lonesome and I just called up to say.
Is there still room for me ’neath the old apple tree
Where there once was a bench for two
Oh, that bench wasn’t long
And you know it wasn’t strong
When I sat there with you.
I’ve got fare back to Maine
And I’ll jump on a train
If your heart beats as fond and as true
Is there still room for me ’neath the old apple tree
If there is I’ll come back to you.
Is there still room for me ’neath the old apple tree
Where there once was a bench for two
Oh, that bench wasn’t long
And you know it wasn’t strong
When I sat there with you.
I’ve got fare back to Maine
And I’ll jump on a train
If your heart beats as fond and as true
Is there still room for me ’neath the old apple tree
If there is I’ll come back to you.
Listen operator, what’s the matter with this ’phone
It seems to me you never had a sweetheart of your own.
You say there’s wire trouble and you’ve got the numbers mixed
Well, hurry up and get the wires fixed.
Is that you dear? yes I can hear, they cut us off somehow,
I’m waiting and I want your answer now.
Is there still room for me ’neath the old apple tree
Where there once was a bench for two
Oh, that bench wasn’t long
And you know it wasn’t strong
When I sat there with you.
I’ve got fare back to Maine
And I’ll jump on a train
If your heart beats as fond and as true
Is there still room for me ’neath the old apple tree

M-O-T-H-E-R, A Word That Means the World to Me
I’ve been around the world, you bet,
But never went to school,
Hard knocks are all I seem to get,
Perhaps I’ve been a fool;
But still, some educated fool,
supposed to be so swell,
Would fail, if they were called upon
a simple word to spell.
Now if you’d like to put me to a test,
There’s one dear name I can spell the best:
“M” is for the million things she gave me,
“O” means only that she’s growing old,
“T” is for the tears were shed to save me,
“H” is for her heart of purest gold;
“E” is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
“R” means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER”,
A word that means the world to me.
When I was but a baby,
long before I learned to walk,
While lying in my cradle,
I would try my best to talk;
It wasn’t long, before I spoke,
and all the neighbors heard,
My folks were very proud of me
for “Mother” was the word.
Although I’ll never lay a claim to fame,
I’m satisfied that I can spell this name:
“M” is for the mercy she possesses,
“O” means that I owe her all I own,
“T” is for her tender sweet caresses,
“H” is for her hands that made a home;
“E” means everything she’s done to help me,
“R” means real and regular, you see,
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER”,
A word that means the world to me.
