サーランド・チャタウェイ（Thurland Chattaway、1872～1947年）作詞、ケリー・ミルズ（Kerry Mills、1869～1948年）作曲による流行歌「赤き翼（インディアンの伝承）（Red Wing (An Indian Fable)）」（http://yogaku-manyoshu.blog.jp/archives/10563714.html）に、1940年、アメリカのシンガーソングライター、ウディ・ガスリー（Woody Guthrie、1912～1967年）が、女性の視点から見た労働組合の歌として、全く新しい歌詞を付けたものです。三番の歌詞だけはガスリーと共にフォークグループ、アルマナック・シンガーズ（Almanac Singers）に参加し、後に映画の脚本作家として活躍したミリアード・ランペル（Millard Lampell、1919～1997年）が書いたものと言われています。アルマナック・シンガーズは1941年にこの歌の録音を残しています。
goons：（金で雇われた）チンピラ、スト破り。
ginks：愚かな、あるいは卑劣な人。
finks：タレ込み屋、スト破り。
deputy sheriff：保安官代理。
raid：襲撃、急襲。
Legion：無数の、大群の。
stick to：（信念などに）しがみつく、固執する。
be wise to 〇〇：〇〇に気づく。
stool：おとり。
strike for 〇〇：〇〇を求めてストライキする。
National Guard：州兵。
auxiliary：部隊。
