Simple Simon
Simple Simon met a pieman
Going to the fair;
Says Simple Simon to the pieman,
“Let me taste your ware.”
Says the pieman to Simple Simon,
“Show me first your penny.”
Says Simple Simon to the pieman,
“Indeed I have not any.”
He went to catch a dickey bird,
And thought he could not fail,
Because he’d got a little salt,
To put upon his tail.
He went to take a bird’s nest,
Was built upon a bough;
The branch gave way and Simon fell
Into a dirty slough.
He went to shoot a wild duck,
But wild duck flew away;
Say Simon, I can’t hit him,
Because he will not stay.”
Simple Simon went a-fishing,
For to catch a whale;
All the water he had got
Was in his mother’s pail.
Simple Simon went a-hunting,
For to catch a hare;
He rode an ass about the streets,
But couldn’t find one there.
He went for to eat honey,
Out of the mustard pot;
He bit his tongue until he cried,
That was all the good he got.
He went to ride a spotted cow
That had a little calf;
She threw him down upon the ground,
Which made the people laugh.
Once Simon made a great snowball,
And brought it in to roast;
He laid it down before the fire,
And soon the ball was lost.
He went to slide upon the ice
Before the ice would bear;
Then he plunged in above his knees,
Which made poor Simon stare.
He washed himself with blacking ball,
Because he had no soap;
Then said unto his mother,
“I’m a beauty now, I hope.”
Simple Simon went to look
If plums grew on a thistle;
He pricked his fingers very much,
Which made poor Simon whistle.
He went for water in a sieve,
But soon it all ran through.
And now poor Simple Simon
Bids you all adieu.

とんまなサイモンはパイ売りと会ったよ
市場に出かけてね
とんまなサイモンはパイ売りに言ったよ
「あんたの売ってる物を味見させとくれよ」
パイ売りはとんまなサイモンに言ったよ
「初めにお金を出しとくれ」
とんまなサイモンはパイ売りに言ったよ
「実は一文も持ってないのさ」
サイモンは小鳥ちゃんを捕りに行ったよ
しくじりっこないって思ってね
だって塩をひとつまみ持ってたんだからさ
小鳥の尻尾に振りかけてやるんだってね
サイモンは鳥の巣を捕りに行ったよ
巣は枝の上にあったんだ
枝が折れたからサイモンは落っこちたよ
ばっちい泥沼の中にね
サイモンは鴨撃ちに行ったんだよ
だけど鴨は飛んでったんだ
サイモンは言ったよ「俺にゃ撃てないよ
だって鴨がじっとしててくれないんだからさ」
とんまなサイモンは釣りに行ったんだよ
クジラを釣ろうと思ってね
手に入ったのは水だけだったよ
母ちゃんのバケツ一杯にしたのさ
とんまなサイモンは狩りに行ったんだよ
野ウサギを捕まえにね
ロバに乗って表通りを行ったんだよ
だけど野ウサギなんて見つからなかったのさ
サイモンはハチミツが食べたくて
辛子の瓶に手を突っ込んだんだよ
舌を刺すような辛さで、泣き出すほどだったんだ
サイモンにできるのはせいぜいこんなとこさ
サイモンはぶちの牝牛を乗り回そうとしたんだよ
牝牛には子牛がいたのさ
牝牛はサイモンを地べたに叩き落としたんだよ
それ見て、みんなは大笑いしたのさ
ある時、サイモンはでっかい雪玉を作って
それを丸焼きにしようとしたんだよ
そいつを直火にかけたもんだから
雪玉はあっと言う間になくなったのさ
サイモンは氷滑りに行ったんだよ
まだ氷が張ってるうちにね
でも氷を突き破って膝まで水に浸かったんだよ
おかげでサイモンは、かわいそうに目ん玉むいてたよ
サイモンは靴墨の玉で身体を洗ってたんだよ
石鹸を持っていなかったからね
それで母ちゃんに向かって言ったんだよ
「これで男前になれるといいんだけどな」
とんまなサイモンは出かけていったよ
アザミにスモモが実ってないかなってね
指に思いっきりトゲが刺さったもんだから
かわいそうにサイモンはヒーヒー言ってたんだよ
サイモンは篩で水を汲もうとしてたんだよ
だけど水はみんな流れ去っていったんだ
それじゃあ、かわいそうでとんまなサイモンも
みんなにさよならして去っていくのさ
ルイス・ジョーダン（Louis Jordan、1908～1975年）の1949年の楽曲「学童の頃（二人が子供だった頃）（School Days (When We Were Kids)）」（http://yogaku-manyoshu.blog.jp/archives/9887398.html）の中で引用されている童謡の一つです。1764年出版の小売本に書かれたものが初出。当時のロンドンで有名だった物乞いサイモン・エディ（Simon Edy、1709～1783年）がモデルとされています。
pieman：パイを売る行商人。古語。
ware：売り物。
a dickey bird：幼児語で小鳥を指す言葉。
got a little salt：鳥の尾に塩をかけると飛べなくなると言う迷信から。当時から子供や騙されやすい人しか、実際にそうなるとは信じていませんでした。
give way：壊れる。
slough：泥沼。
bear：持ちこたえる。
plunge in：突っ込む。
stare：目を見開く。
blacking ball：玉状に練り固めた靴墨。
thistle：アザミ。トゲがあり、実は食用にならない。
sieve：篩、濾し器。
