Woodman! Spare That Tree!

Woodman spare that tree!
Touch not a single bough;
In youth it sheltered me,
And I'll protect it now;
'Twas my fore father's hand
That placed it near the cot,
There, woodman, let it stand,
Thy axe shall harm it not!

That old familiar tree,
Whose glory and renown
Are spread o’er land and sea,
And wouldst thou hack it down?
Woodman, forbear thy stroke!
Cut not its earth, bound ties;
Oh! spare that aged oak
Now towering to the skies!

When but a idle boy
I sought its grateful shade;
In all their gushing joy
Here, too, my sisters played.
My mother kiss’d me here;
My father press’d my hand—
Forgive this foolish tear,
But let that old oak stand!

My heart-strings round thee cling,
Close as thy bark, old friend!
Here shall the wild-bird sing,
And still thy branches bend.
Old tree! the storm still brave!
And, woodman, leave the spot;
While I've a hand to save,
Thy axe shall harm it not.

The Boys of Kilkenny

The boys of Kilkenny are stout roving blades,
When they get into company with pretty young maids;
They’ll court them, and kiss them, and trate them so free,
Och! of all the towns in Ireland, sweet Kilkenny for me.
Och! of all the towns in Ireland, sweet Kilkenny for me.

Through the middle of Kilkenny there runs a clear stream,
In the town of Kilkenny, there lives a fair dame;
Her lips are like roses, her cheeks much the same,
Like a dish of sweet strawberries smoder’d in crame.
Like a dish of sweet strawberries smoder’d in crame.

Her eyes are as black as Kilkenny’s black coal,
Which through my poor bosom have burned a big hole,
Her mind, like its river, smooth, gentle, and clear,
But her heart is more hard nor its marble, I’m sure.
But her heart is more hard nor its marble, I’m sure.

Kilkenny’s pretty town, and shines where it stands,
And the more I think on it, the more my heart warms,
For if I was in Kilkenny I’d think myself at home,
For ’tis there I get sweethearts, but here I get none.
For ’tis there I get sweethearts, but here I get none.

(The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous)」(http://yogaku-manyoshu.blog.jp/archives/6598277.html)の歌詞で「俺にはキルケニーが一番(Kilkinny for me)」と言ってる歌です。 (The Meeting of the Waters)」の節に乗せて歌われています。

trate:treat。
smoder’d:smothered。
crame:cream。
shines where it stands:別のアイルランドのトラッド「愛するポルトモア(Bonny Portmore)」からの引用。

’Mid Scenes of Confusion

’Mid scenes of confusion and creature complaints,
How sweet to my soul is communion with saints;
To find at the banquet of mercy there’s room,
And feel in the presence of Jesus at home!

Home, home, sweet, sweet home,
Prepare me, dear Savior, for heaven, my home.

Sweet bonds that unite all the children of peace;
And thrice blessed Jesus whose love cannot cease:
Tho’ oft from Thy presence in sadness I roam,
I long to behold Thee, in glory, at home!

Home, home, sweet, sweet home,
Prepare me, dear Savior, for heaven, my home.

Whate’er Thou deniest, O give me Thy grace,
The Spirit’s sure witness, and smiles of Thy face;
Inspire me with patience to wait at Thy throne,
And find even now a sweet foretaste of home.

Home, home, sweet, sweet home,
Prepare me, dear Savior, for heaven, my home.

I long, dearest Lord, in Thy beauties to shine,
No more as an exile in sorrow to pine,
And in Thy dear image, arise from the tomb,
With glorified millions to praise Thee at home.

Home, home, sweet, sweet home,
Prepare me, dear Savior, for heaven, my home.

(Clari, or the Maid of Milan)」の中で主人公クラリの歌うアリア「故郷! Sweet Home!)」 (The Saints’ Melody. A New Selection of upwards of One Thousand Hymns, Founded Upon the Doctrines of Distinguishing Grace, and Adapted to every Part of the Christian Experience and Devotion in the Ordinances of Christ, etc.)」

’Mid:amid、
「Prepare me, dear Savior, for heaven」prepare A for Bで、AにBを受け入れる覚悟をさせる、の意。
